In which Cities Aviv continues to perform stylistic acrobatics, getting his new wave on. Approximating the distinctly British sound, the Memphis native half-raps half-sings over a classique sounding synth line. This is not complex music, but it works in the way that Alan Palomo makes his faux-psychedelic pop work. Hate it or love it, you gotta give Aviv some credit for actually attempting a sound as opposed to “sampling” it and throwing half-baked raps over the top (looking at you Theopilus). “Forever” will appear on the Black Pleasure tape, out tomorrow (November 13) via Mishka.

Memphis (along with Houston and the Bay Area) are often mythologized as “street” hip hop meccas. Everyone knows about New York, Atlanta and LA, but if you’re down with Gangsta Boo and Playa Fly then you can run conversations among your hip hop head friends. The Memphis song is distinctly Southern, but far removed from Atlanta strip club culture and far more indebted to the city’s long history of racial tension and violence. It’s dark, often featuring John Carpenter horror score samples, and heavily based on a localized street realism. Gavin Mays aka Cities Aviv is a Memphis native, but is a square peg in the round hole of the Memphis prototype. For one, he’s just a lot more positive. That sounds cliche, but Memphis hip hop is fucking depressing. He shares a some sonic qualities with 90’s Memphis hip hop, but also samples the likes of Depeche Mode Steely Dan. That’s why it’s no surprise that his latest track features production from our favorite Mancunian Star Slinger. The production is a bit of sunny, cut-and-paste fare, belying Mays’ past as a member of a hardcore band. Mays sounds like he’s rapping from the next room over, yelling almost, with some slight reverb. Fast and chaste women is the topic of choice of course and the track sounds distinctly un-Memphis until the last 20 seconds or so when it devolves into trunk rattling choppiness. Stream below.

I would tell an April Fools joke here, but I’m just not that funny. Instead, we got a nice six pack of tunes  for what might amount to be the most versatile Sounds From The Astral Plane yet. Don’t have much time for words today, but all these are well worth a listen. That Supreme Cuts joint has been on repeat all week.

Got a new track from Memphis spitta Cities Aviv for you today. Cities makes self-dubbed “pop music for the unpopular,” but it is more along the lines of old school Three 6 Mafia mixed with some West Coast futurism. Aviv’s heavily layered tracks can come off as dense at times, but the sample heavy production fits into the “cloud rap” genre inhabited by the likes of Main Attrakionz. Cities has a new track called “Flex Your Gold” and it’s the beat is pure fire. Not sure what that sample is, but it’s executed masterfully.
