Mixes

I’ve been avoiding Valentines Day themed music all day, but this is too good to pass up. Everyone’s favorite maximalist, Hudson Mohawke, tones it down for one day to bring you Slow Jams Chapter V. For five years now, The Glaswegian native has brought the masses the best in slow jams and general love-making music. I haven’t had the chance to give the mix a spin, so I’ll let LuckyMe take it away:

5 years deep, the kid Hudson Mohawke returns with the definitive soundtrack to Valentines. Look, cancel that reservation. Put the money into good pizza and champagne. You’re getting this shit for free so buy your spiritual counterpoint something: the Heathers DVD. A single rose. Some salted caramels. Whatever. You got all the other magic you need right here. And if you’re alone tonight that’s okay; being into shit like this you’re gonna be fine. Trust us. Buy yourself those caramels. Get naked enough. Let a lil Mo get inside you… Happy Valentines everybody.

Yesterday, we honored the late, great J Dilla by posting an interview he did on the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Show on BBC Radio One. At the same time as we were posting that legendary interview, one of our favorite contemporary hip hop duos was speaking with Mr. Peterson. Stas and Cat of THEESatisfaction dished with Peterson on their musical backgrounds, the “fusion” of sounds in the  Seattle music scene and their favorite female poets. Both Stas and Cat are quite eloquent and the interview is a great listen. The jazz heavy show also features the new James Blake D’angelo remix and of course a Dilla track. You can find the tracklist for show here and stream/download it below.

Nice little mix from Dropping Gems representative LDFD in anticipation of his upcoming US mini-tour. LDFD falls on more hip hop/glitch oriented Dropping Gems artist scale and this mix features a hard hitting combination of originals and recent contemporary tracks from A$AP Rocky, Young Jeezy and indomitable Riff Raff. Stream/download below.

Update: LDFD is actually a member of Daedelus’s label, Magical Properties, not Dropping Gems

Up until recently, I detested R&B. When I first started getting into hip hop when I was 12 or 13, I associated the genre with the likes of Usher, Ne-Yo and Mariah Carey who appeared to be the antithesis of my backpacker ethos. To put it succinctly, I would much rather listen to the squeeky, stream-of-consciousness flow of Madlib’s Quasimoto than the shiny bullshit of T-Pain (admittedly not R&B). I liked the occasional Anthony Hamilton, or Erykah Badu track, and I enjoyed making fun of R. Kelly, but I held an unreasonable contempt for the genre for many years. Boy, how wrong I was. “Alternative” R&B acts like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean have opened my eyes to the genre, and pushed me to investigate more contemporary R&B.

D’Angelo had also impressed me on J Dilla tracks, but I had never thought twice about investigating his solo work. Recently, the Richmond, VA crooner has emerged from hibernation and scheduled a few live performances. The below mix is from a recent performance in Sweden, and features a number of originals, covers, and two Dilla tracks (!!!). While I cannot begin to understand the impact D’Angelo has had on modern R&B and the neo-soul movement, I can begin to respect him and his contemporaries for their impact on modern hip hop, and as the forefathers of The Weeknd’s and Frank Ocean’s of 2012.
