Everyone is always looking for the next big thing. At the moment, that big thing is the next artist in the vein of Jamie XX and James Blake. Subtle electronic music has risen to prominence in recent years. First, the Pitchforkians (who I hesitantly include myself among) fell in love with Aphex Twin, then it was Burial, but recently, there has been an influx of like-minded artists. Alexander Wolfe aka Wolfey may be next in line. Wolfe graduated from Berklee College of Music and is currently attending McGill in Montreal. He has opened for Jonwayne and Eskmo and released his debut EP, titled Sleep Country, in December. While only three tracks long, Sleep Country is a thrilling listen from start to finish. Empty space is ushered out in a beautiful fashion. Seemingly random bleeps and bloops form together in a complex, rhythmic fashion. Vocal samples are altered and chopped (“Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” by Bobby Blue Bland on “A Marvelous Persona”) to bring out emotion from an otherwise bleak 13 minutes. I’m not necessarily calling Wolfey the next big thing, but there is certainly potential here, and I am eagerly awaiting more material from Mr. Wolfe.

Earlier in the week, we wrote about the Sasquatch website malfunction that revealed a few acts from the lineup. Before the entire lineup is released tonight, we have another bit of information that leaked out when the website glitched. While this news is completely unconfirmed, several reports have articulated that this years festival will have an all Northwest hip hop stage called the “Maine Stage.” This is in line with confirmed reports that the festival will have a fifth stage, although the name is highly questionable. Probably a reference to hip hop slang, but who spells it that way? They really couldn’t have come up with a better name? Anyways, like the name or not, this is great news. The lineup leak included Grynch, Dyme Def, THEESatisfaction, Sol, Fatal Lucciano, Fly Moon Royalty, and SPAC3MAN, so if the stage is real, it is shaping up pretty well. Check out Guerilla Candy’s take on the stage, and their insights into the “Macklemore effect.”

Finally! Some new Krit. Big K.R.I.T releases the first single off of his upcoming 4evaNaDay mixtape. With his last mixtape garnering wild amounts of appreciation with an 8.2 from the ridiculous rating system of pitchfork (I’m not a fan) and HipHopDx calling it the “rap album to beat of 2011”. K.R.I.T. not only brings his own lyricism to the plate but also produced the entirety of the mixtape. An impressive feat that not many rappers can do with the amount of quality and passion that K.R.I.T. put into every track. Needless to say, I’m very excited to see a new mixtape from K.R.I.T. This new track mimics his Another Naive Individual Glorifying Greed & Encouraging Racism track with its saxophone sample and KRITS smooth flow.

His new single, hilariously named Boobie Miles. 4evaNaDay is set to drop February 20th

One of my favorite seasons of the year is almost upon us. As Winter segues into Spring, another season begins as well: Festival Season. Coachella usually marks the start of the season, but another upcoming festival, Noise Pop, is taking a stab at the supremacy of festivals like South By Southwest and CMJ. These are not traditional camping festivals, instead opting to be held in urban environments, and across many different venues. Instead of highlighting massive headliners, and the previous years “up and comers,” these festivals are all about finding this years “up and comers.” Noise Pop is held in San Francisco and is put on by the same company, also called Noise Pop, that holds Treasure Island Music Festival in the Bay. It will take place February 21-26 Like all festivals, Noise Pop does have some major headliners, namely The Flaming Lips performing The Soft Bulletin, Die Antwoord, Porter Robinson and Sleigh Bells.

The above bands will undoubtedly put on a great show, but the smaller bands are the lifeblood of the festival. It’s incredibly difficult to predict who will make it big in the lead-up to festivals like Noise Pop, but here are a few random guesses. Check out the rest of the lineup after the jump.

Tropical Popsicle – San Diego four-piece band that has yet to settle on any specific niche, much less any genre. I don’t know what to call it, but I like it.

Born Gold – Don’t really know anything about Born Gold. He/she claims to be from US minor outlying islands and creates synth-pop with an emphasis on the synths.

Love him or hate him, Lil B has worked with some A-list producers over the past several years including Clams Casino, 9th Wonder and The Cataracs. More recently, the Basedgod has enlisted Seattle-native Keyboard Kid as his main producer, and while B’s music is a bit trite at this point, his producer’s beats are everything but. Since June of 2011, Keyboard Kid has released five excellent instrumental albums; all with some form of “based” in the title. The beats range from fuzzed out, experimental hip hop (Lil B’s favorites) to standard boom bap hip hop.

The young Seattle-ite loves indie-rock samples, sampling Phoenix and Frou Frou, on his THE MIND IS SO COMPLEX WHEN YOUR BASED tape, but his tracks never get corny like Chiddy Bang’s or Hoodie Allen’s do. He’s also obsessed with video games resulting in the inclusion of many 8-bit sounds in his beats. The product is series of hazy, yet futuristic soundscapes with vocals that feel familiar, but are so far removed from their original context that they have a completely separate meaning. Keyboard Kid’s newest tape, BASEDTREASURE, is another great listen in the vein of his past few tapes and for only $3 is a steal. It features two instrumentals that have been rapped over by Lil B and Main Attrakionz, but the rest is all new work. Like Clams Casino, most will enjoy Keyboard Kid’s beats on their own, and the young Seattle-ite might see a Clams-like rise to prominence in 2012. Stream/buy BASEDTREASURE from Keyboard Kid’s Bandcamp below.

If you’re in the mood for some feel-good, charming and intricate chillwave, look no further. Teen Daze, hailing from the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, crafts candy-sweet, listenable yet mature tracks that will please your ears and send a live crowd into an innocent kind of euphoria. With a stage presence that is just awkward and naïve enough to be entertaining but never uncomfortable, Teen Daze has been gaining popularity nationwide over the last few years. With a mixture of self-released EP’s and singles, as well as his “A Silent Planet” EP on Waaga Records and “Four More Years,” on Wonder Beard Tapes, Teen Daze continues to produce whimsical, forward-moving original tracks as well as successful covers and remixes of the likes of Washed Out, Pepper Rabbit and The Local Natives.

Now, Teen Daze is preparing to release his first full-length, titled “All Of Us, Together,” which will be released May 22nd on Lefse Records. This week, he gives us the first single off his upcoming release. The track is called “Brooklyn Sunburn,” and you can listen to it right here:

If you (inevitably) get hooked and want more, check out his Pepper Rabbit “Murder Room” remix here:

Some artists manage to stay relevant no matter what era, medium, or format they are working in. Usually, these sorts of transcendent artists are the tastemakers of every generation, always setting the standards for critical success, and often commercial success as well. Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame is one of those artists. In 1991, Massive Attack allowed Barrow to record some of his own material in their studio and the rest is history. Beth Gibbons’ vocals are what many people remember after listening to Portishead tracks, but Barrow is the real genius behind the legendary trip hop/experimental band. After releasing one class album (Dummy) and another highly acclaimed one (Portishead) in the 90’s, the group broke up, only to get back together to release another transcendent album 11 years later (Third). Not only is it nearly unheard to release albums so far apart, but to it in such a flawless manner, and to reach hundreds of thousands of new fans outside of the UK (reached #7 in the Billboard 200).

Since Third, Barrow has embarked on several projects outside of Portishead. In 2009, he has joined with Billy Fuller and Matt Williams to form the production trio, BEAK>. The trio produced Anika’s scattershot (in the best way possible) self-titled debut, released on Stones Throw. In 2010, Barrow became the music supervisor for Banksy’s hotly debated documentary (mockumentary?) Exit Through The Gift Shop, which received an Oscar nomination. Needless to say, it is not exactly easy to get into Banksy’s inner-circle. Barrow has worked on several other projects as well since Third, but he has put the most energy into his record label, Invada Records.

Invada was started as an Australian label by Barrow, Ashley Anderson, and Fraser Stewart, in 2002. In 2003, Barrow, with the help of Paul Horlick, moved its focus to the UK and began to build a roster of British artists. The label has since been at the forefront of experimental music in the UK, eschewing genre labels entirely, and attempting to bring listeners as disparate a roster as possible. Invada exists in the dub, experimental rock, and hip hop worlds, but is not limited to any one.  Anika, who I mention above, is one of the more popular artists on the label, and in a lot of ways her being signed to Stones Throw and Invada makes a lot of sense. Two forward-thinking, experimental labels are not going to sound remotely alike, but Invada and Stones Throw share a similar ethos when it comes to signing artists, and releasing music.

Invada has garnered a cult-like following in the UK, but is still largely unknown to American audiences.  This needs to change. Last week, the label released a sampler featuring recently released, or to be released tracks from its roster. The only artist, I had previously heard of was Anika due to her Stones Throw cred, but listening to this sampler has captivated my interest in the rest of Invada’s roster. Barrow has a hand in many of the tracks on the sampler, but none of them sound like Portishead knockoffs, or even attempts at emulation. I don’t have the musical knowledge, or time to analyze every track on the sampler, but if you’re going to give anything a listen today, this should be it. Hopefully, Invada will gain an American following in the coming months/years, and if this sampler is any indication, it will happen sooner rather than later.

oh man. survived the first exam of the semester. Time to toss on some headphones and listen to the extensive collection of beats from Ta-Ku. A recent graduate from the Redbull Music Academy (08), Ta-Ku has been releasing a massive amount of beat tapes along with some new EP’s. Influenced by the likes of Dilla, and Onra, the influence of these two come through in his recent Dusty Instrumentals release. With 19 solid beats from Ta-Ku I couldn’t be happier. The beat tape can be streamed here http://ta-ku.me/album/d-u-s-t-y.

A good taster off of his Day & Night EP which is a free download off of his bandcamp page at http://dayandnight.bandcamp.com/

Also, in tribute to DillaTa-Ku made a beat a day for the late and great producer.  His new LP Scarlette is set to drop this february
