It has been a long while since the last edition of Sounds From The Astral Plane, but with tunes piling up in the inbox, it feels like the right time to bring it back. Although we only started this whole blog deal in January, I feel it’s safe to say that 2012 has been one of the most exciting music years in recent memory. We attempt to cover all of the music we love, but sometimes things slip through the cracks. We’re human after all. Every week (or so), you’ll find the originals, remixes and DJ mixes that we missed. This will also be a space to see how y’all respond to new artists so don’t hesitate to send over your/your friend’s latest and greatest. At this point, the scope of Sounds From The Astral Plane is wide open so you’ll find anything and everything in this space. This week, we have everything from Formes’ incandescent take on psych rock to Dubbel Dutch’s dancehall stylings. As always, any and all feedback would be much appreciated! Relive Myrryrs’ 30 Minute Boiler Room LA Set
One of the great things about Boiler Room is that, in the weeks after every event, we get to relive each and every great moment in breathtaking (ok, maybe not so much) webcam footage. Hallows Eve has come and past, but we can still relive the frightful Body High takeover from a few weeks ago. Today brings a short, but very rare half hour mix from Nashville’s own Myrryrs replete with enough low-rider music to carry you into the weekend. Oh and fuck the crowd. I know I’ve harped on it before, but can’t these crowds show a little enthusiasm. It’s especially bad at the LA shows *wink*wink*. Stream above and catch the podcast at your friendly (or not) neighborhood digital music retailer.
D33J Refines Live Set At Boiler Room LA
A few weeks ago, I predicted that D33J would become the next star to emerge from the Wedidit Collective. A string of impressive remixes incited me to make that comment and his latest appearance at Boiler Room Los Angeles proves that the man born Djavan Santos has the chops to do very big things. Toting an MPD32 and a guitar, D33J’s live set is a thing of beauty, combining constant melody with strong drum programming. If you’re in a rush, skip to 12 minutes in for a brilliant reverb filled romp around and just try not to beam bright. I don’t recommend missing a single second though as there are a few exclusives from the recent Anticon signee. Stream the mix below and look out for a podcast download in the coming days.
Halloween Special With DJ Funeral And Body High
At midnight on Halloween, DJ Funeral will release his debut EP on Body High, an odd combination of horror flick samples and club music. But not just any club music, Body High club music. The Los Angeles-based label has taken North American club music by the horns over the past 12 months and not let go. Not much is known about DJ Funeral, but he materialized out of thin air (or so I’ve heard) to perform at the Body High/Boiler Room event last Tuesday to play some spooky sounds.. Out of a stacked lineup including Samo Soundboy, Delivery and Myrryrs, Funeral’s set was impressively dynamic and featured the most unheard tracks, presumably from the new EP. Pop this on (or this Hits from the Grave mix) at your sexy halloween party if you have the guts. Stream above and have your trigger fingers ready come midnight on Hallows Eve.
Jackmaster Soundtracks Your Girlfriend’s Next House Party

Jackmaster is one sixth of the legendary Numbers crew, Rinse.FM regular and something of a relic in 2012. In this day and age, the concept of the DJ as separate from producer, as purveyor of what is cool and fresh is outdated. Guys like Jackmaster, Annie Mac, Ben UFO and Oneman are most likely the last of their kind. Radio shows are increasingly being helmed by the likes of Skream & Benga, Diplo, etc. and respectable DJ skills are on a precipitous decline on a mainstream level. I’ve never been lucky enough to see Jackmaster perform live (and I do consider what he does performance), I have been a religious listener of his Rinse.FM show and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Yesterday saw the release of Volume #3 of his Tweak-A-Holic series, replete with “vibey” 80’s hits. The mix gets going with Toto’s “Georgy Porgy” and moves on and on from there. Stream the mix below and head here to download it in exchange for your email.
Stream Ryan Hemsworth’s FACT Mix, Jeremih Remix

You can call him Bill Russell! Or Ryan… Mr. Hemsworth does share some qualities with the all time great Celtic, namely a statesmanlike record of consistency and timely performances. Not one to skimp on a mix, Hemsworth brings 60+ minutes of tunes from Green Ova, MMG and Baauer to FACT Mag. It’s probably his most self-centered mix and it might just be my favorite. More Hemsworth is certainly not a bad thing. And that “Fuck You All The Time” remix. Fuxwidit. Stream the mix and the Jeremih remix below.

Rap Class Guest Mix For The Astral Plane
Remember the days when hip hop party tunes were about having a good time, sippin’ on a cold one and maybe snagging yourself a fine Applebaum? When names like Big Daddy Kane, Redman and The Pharcyde rung true? When Dr. Luke was your endocrinologist and David Guetta was another anonymous floppy haired muppet? The times have changed young grasshopper. If you asked the average teenager what party hip hop is, the answers would probably boil down to a collection of MMG, Young Money and G.O.O.D. Music artists with a Chief Keef or two thrown in here or there. It’s easy to be a golden era yearning curmudgeon after spending a night at a (read: any) club and listening to “Niggas In Paris” and “Ass” on repeat.
We recently enlisted Portland’s own Rap Class aka John Kammerle of Dropping Gems to lay down some tracks for our Guest Mix series and while it is firmly nested in old school hip hop and R&B, it remains decidedly fresh. We tend to focus on “future music” here at The Astral Plane, but even we need to indulge in some nostalgic listening every so often. It is called the “golden era” for a reason. Anyways, my words don’t really do the mix justice so I’ll let John take it away:
This mix, is like, all about my go-to songs. When I DJ out, these are the songs that loosen up the crowd. Some of the songs are from records that I think are rare (maybe?), then some chillers + some original remixes and songs from me. I’m proud of this mix because it represents where my initial love of rap music started, and has taken me. From the beginning, this is where I find myself today.
For more Rap Class music, download Greatest Hits (or buy the cassette) here. As always the mix is up for stream and download. Be sure to give the man behind the art and team member Sam Andrus some love.
Daphni Runs Through Three Decades Of House Music At Boiler Room
Full disclosure: attending Boiler Room is something of a dream of mine (hayyy organizers) that has yet to be fully realized. I’m currently abroad and I heard about the Decibel Festival x Boiler Room events in my hometown of Seattle I nearly broke down in tears. Similarly, I have been unable to attend any events in Los Angeles where I spend most of the year. That’s why it kills me to see an apathetic crowd like the one at the Daphni/Four Tet curated Boiler Room earlier this week. Sure it’s awkward to be on camera, but at least act like you want to be there. IT’S FUCKING CARIBOU UP THERE. Ok, deep breath. Rant over. Performing as Daphni (read our Jiaolong review here), Dan Snaith ran through disco, acid and deep house numbers that clearly influenced the album. There aren’t many DJs out there who can meld the sounds of the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s so effortlessly, but Snaith excels in a uniquely timeless manner. Stream the mix above.
Stream Unreleased Flying Lotus Song, Mix For BBC 1Xtra

If you’ve seen Flying Lotus perform over the past few months, then you’re in for some serious (hopefully drug addled) flashbacks. Last night, Mr. Ellison graced Diplo’s BBC 1Xtra show with his presence, letting loose a stream of party ready tracks, ranging crunchy Dubstep to true school Chicago juke. You might remember his chipmunk-ed out version of Schoolboy Q’s “Hands On The Wheel” and Mono/Poly’s “Los Angeles”, both staples in his live set. The mix also features a mini section from the one and only Gaslamp Killer, featuring tunes off of Breakthrough. If my words haven’t piqued your interest yet, check out “Flotus” below, a brilliant unreleased FlyLo jam that makes you wonder what else the madman has stuck away in his hard-drive. Head over to the BBC website to stream the full mix.
Jacques Greene Takes Over BBC Radio 6 For Two Hours
![]()
Over the past two years, Jacques Greene has elevated himself into the North American bass music elite and become one of its curatorial geniuses as well. Through his own Vase label and his on-point mixes, Greene has broken artists like Zodiac and Tommy Kruise and helped further the careers of Koreless and Arclight. His latest (two hour!) mix for BBC Radio 6 jumps all over the bass music sphere and includes brand exclusive Grown Folk, Zodiac and Koreless tunes, as well as a new one from Mr. Greene himself. Head over to the BBC website to listen to the full mix and stream the unreleased Greene cut below.
