Mixes

In which Joy Orbison maintains his position as the most intriguing man in dance music. Some  bedroom R&B (is there any other kind) and light techno fair to assist your next pre-funk and after the words “early in the morning when’s I think about you” are uttered, you know it’s all over really. This mix is very #rare of course so grab it right now. I mean it. Head over to RA to download and read a short interview with Joy O.

That is, TeamSupreme put up edition 23 of the beat cypher series. This week’s sample offered more in the way of relaxed boom-bap than the past few and allowed acts like Two Fresh and Djemba Djemba to flex a more nuanced side to their production game. Michael Menert of Pretty Lights Music offers up a smooth bit of sample soul, but .anansi undoubtedly steals the show with his mix ending contribution. Grab Vol. 23 here, or stream the video below.

The Boiler Room’s American editions have been on fire lately, LA bringing in Friends of Friends and New York hosting a coterie of young production talent and left-field MC’s. At the end of July, hip hoppers Haleek Maul, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Flatbush Zombies took the stage at Boiler Room NY and tore it done. The one seeming outlier on the line-up that night was Body High representative Jim-E Stack, but by the end of his, his place on the bill was more than justified. For some reason, the Body High sound works perfectly when surrounded by pure-bred hip hop. Stack, DJ Sliink and Myrryrs clearly play a ton of hip hop in their sets, but it still surprised me when this set fit perfectly in between the stark sounds of Haleek Maul and Flatbush Zombies. Stream the mix below and download it here.

I’ve had a lot of fun posting videos of Groundislava and RL Grime from the FoF takeover at Boiler Room LA over the past few days, but this Young Adults mix might just be the best of the bunch (and we still have Shlohmo and Salva to go). Young Adults is the perfect antithesis to the fist pumping shit show that most people in the US call house music these music. His mixing and song selection is sunny and subtle. There’s almost always a 4×4 kick going, but the music doesn’t drive as much as from meanders from place to place, exhorting your hips to move before you even realize it. Stream the set below and look out for the podcast in the coming days.

I remember seeing Groundislava (along with Shlohmo, Salva and Tomas Barfod) at The Echoplex in LA back in May and the dude just owns the stage. Besides being a fairly large human and dressing in what I assume pimps in the suburbs wore, Jasper Peterson just has a huge personality and is having as much fun as anyone up on stage. If you haven’t had a chance to see him or can’t foreseen one in the near future, then his recent set at Friends of Friends’ recent Boiler Room takeover is the next best thing. You can stream the full set below and download here.

It’s been far too long since we’ve posted a TeamSupreme tape. It blows my mind that Dane and Preston’s little project started 21 weeks and is still gaining steam and influence. Love the new graphics as well. Volume 21 features mainstays Papi, Kenny Segal, Colta, Nalepa and Nobody as well Trap Arnold (of M|O|D), Gypsy Mamba and Black Actors. If I had to choose, and it’s tough this week, I would have to say I’m deferential to Snorlax and Trap Arnold’s collaboration. For more info on the TeamSupreme beat cyphers, check out our interview with Dane and Preston. As always, stream the video and hit the download link below.

Special Vinyl Edition

Since our inception back in January, London phenom Stavrogin has been making major moves within the world of UK Bass and House music. Think Disclosure. Think Addison Groove. Think Julio Bashmore. That’s high company for a young man with only a few releases under his belt, but don’t be surprised if you hear the next buzz act being compared to Stavrogin in a few months. We were lucky enough to pull the Lewes native in for an exclusive mix that has not and will not leave the rotation for a long while.

Like so many niche forums on the internet, the debate about electronic music has taken a nasty and acerbic turn as of late. I’m curious, do y’all like getting into senseless, roundabout arguments about DJ’s and buttons and whatnot? I didn’t think so. As a result, the newest contribution to our Guest Mix series transcends the debate. That’s right, vinyl. Wax. You feel that well of happiness opening up in the deepest recessions of your body? That’s nostalgia right there. No one can argue with vinyl.

If you like piano crescendos, soaring falsettos or Calvin Harris, this mix probably isn’t for you. If you tend to go for stripped down bass music from the likes of Untold, Ben Klock and Stickman, jump on the party bus. It might get a little smoky. If anything, this mix should make some Stavrogin vinyl seem like a really, really good idea. Record labels, the ball is in your court. Like always, stream and download below and don’t be afraid to gives us some feedback.

For the better part of a decade, the UK has been the home for all things bass music. From Croydon record shops to the fabled Warehouse Project of Manchester, the Brits can never seem to get enough low end frequencies. Over a similar period of time, a number of previously insular and heavily localized brands of club music have broken out of their shells and entered the mainstream consciousness. Blunted hip hop, go-go and club can now be found in locales far removed from the streets of L.A., D.C. and Baltimore. On Volume 3 of Mixes From The Astral Plane, Vancouver resident Kong conflates takes club and bass and makes them one. Kong makes you forget all the sub-genres I just ignominiously named and allows you delve deep into sounds of the future. Download Volume 3 below and catch the tracklist after the jump.

Back in the day, Bok and L-Vis 1990 played back 2 back sets on a regular basis at the Night Slugs club  night. The regularity of those affairs is the stuff of legend, but every so often now, the two label-heads strut their shit. Most recently, they hit up London’s Boiler Room, the pitch perfect location for 40+ minutes of space age club music. You can now stream their set from back in June courtesy of Boiler Room. They know us all too well. Stream below.

Since the inception of this blog, our foremost goal has been to display the music we love (and hope you love) in a tasteful, uninhibited fashion. To that point, I believe we’ve been fairly successful. Our secondary goal has been to bring you original content in the form of interviews, album reviews and most recently, our Mixes From The Astral Plane series. Today, we bring you a new form of original content: Guest Mixes. Whereas Mixes From The Astral Plane is meant to be a sort of overview of what we’re loving on at the moment, Guest Mixes will highlight the work of our favorite artists, one at a time.

For our first ever Guest Mix, we’ve enlisted the man we called the “Dutch trap luminary” last month, Boeboe. As the wheat separates from the chaff in the trap game, Boeboe has emerged with an impressive grasp of hip hop, as well as the strand of bass heavy British house music championed by the likes of Julio Bashmore, XXXY and Eats Everything. Last month’s Act Stupid EP on Sabacan Records exhibited Boeboe’s mastery of the low end and it doesn’t look like he’ll stop anytime soon. Without further ado, we present to you Boeboe’s Guest Mix.
