Remixes

figgy

We were introduced to Figgy back in January when he expertly remxied Drake’s “Doing It Wrong”, melting Aubrey’s vocals into checkmunk territory over a seductive slow house jam. Yesterday, we received another remix in the same mold, this time a timely refix of The-Dream’s “Ghetto”. The-Dream’s falsetto slides right into the grooves of Figgy’s aloof production, which leans towards the pseudo-trance that’s becoming increasingly popular. Stream below and grab the remix here.

caleb stone

Despite releasing a wealth of quality material in the past year-plus, our favorite autotune automaton, the one and only Future, hasn’t been remixed nearly as much as some of his peers in the rappity singity game. We might receive one Future remix for every 10 Drizzy redos and that’s just not conducive to a positive music landscape. To help right the ship, Los Angeles resident Caleb Stone recently bootlegged “Karate Chop” into an equal parts melodic and molasses mess of hi hats and rippling synth work. Guitar licks encircle Nayvadius’ muted vocals projecting an opiatic effect to the original’s decidedly triumphant vibe. Stone’s remix has a little bit of a Ryan Hemsworth vibe to it in that Future’s vocals are kept almost entirely intact, but the track takes on an entirely new character with the Angeleno behind the wheel. Not to start the hype wheel or anything, but Stone might just be onto something here.

dj kiff

It was clear from the day it was released that Ciara’s Mike Will produced “Body Party” was a perfect candidate for the Jersey Club treatment and certified Brick Bandit DJ Kiff has stepped up to the plate. The formula is simple and fine-tuned for a track like “Body Party” as bed springs, and that signature Jersey bounce accentuate Ciara’s vocal performance and Mike Will’s chords to perfection.

jerome

Classixx are a Los Angeles duo who make breezy, late-aughts sounding pop music with straight-forward disco lean. It’s infectious as hell, if not a little bit retread. You all know (or should know) Jerome LOL. Recently, Classixx released “Holding On”, their most popular tune to date and, while slightly dry, is a truly great dance number. Out now on Astral Plane fave Innovative Leisure, the track has racked up countless plays on Soundcloud and garnered much acclaim on the disputably effective Hype Machine. If the original didn’t fit your fancy though, Jerome is here to save the day. It’s a simple remix in the end, a trial of addition and subtraction with voraciously growling sub bass and a delectable slow house vibe. No word on a release yet, but this gem is sure to see the light of day sooner rather than later.

cam'ron

After corralling the one and only Killa Cam for the remix of “Every Little Thing”, Paris’ own Para One grabbed Night Slugs don Girl Unit for the remix. Wait, what? Cam’Ron and Girl Unit? Have we entered an alternate dimension? If the “Every Little Thing” remix package is a barometer for the state of the internet, we might have to ready ourselves for a bevy of incredibly creative (and equally ill-advised) remixes from across the pop spectrum. Not to say that this Girl Unit remix is unpalatable by any means, it’s quite the opposite, but these virtual posse cuts have a lot of room to fail. In the meantime, enjoy the madness that is “Every Little Thing”.

bok bok fade to mind

In anticipation of a slew of exciting upcoming shows, Night Slugs co-boss Bok Bok has, well, gone the fuck in on the third edition of the Fade To Mind mix series. It’s an all exclusives everything affair here and if brand new Jam City, L-Vis 1990 and MikeQ is your kind of bidness, jump on this mix immediately. Almost more exciting than Bok Bok’s transcendent mixing and the heap of exclusives is a  more coherent taste of Kowton’s remix of Jeremih’s still simmering “Fuck U All The Time”. The remix entered our collective consciousness through a few shoddy live videos, but Bok Bok has offered it up in all of its rude boy glory. Because really, Kowton has no business remixing this track. But he does. And it’s so beyond everything else coming out right now that it might just be the most anticipated track of the yung year. eprom

Since the release of his breakout hit “Regis Chillbin” last year, Eprom has made a name for himself producing frantic dance tunes that aren’t beholden to any one tempo or frame of reference. They’re loud, garish and eccentric, straying from the populist strands of house and garage that dominate the underground. The West Coast representative’s latest entry comes in the form of a remix of Rhye’s “Woman”. The remix sees Eprom at his most restrained, covering the original’s wispy vocals in understated hi hats and a simple chord progression melody. It’s simple and trance-inducing, far from the seizure-inducing sound of the Metahuman LP. Stream below and download here.

ryan hemsworth

Hi haters, Lana and Ryan in the building. If nothing else, Ms. Del Rey is great remix fodder and it’s actually something of a surprise that Halifax’s own hasn’t taken a stab at her much maligned crooning. While Hemsworth has dilly dallied in straightforward four on the floor stuff as of late, his best work has consistently come in the hip hop and R&B realm. I’ve never listened to “Summertime Sadness” before (and probably never will), and while Del Rey’s vocals are still fairly grating, Hemsworth still manages to flip it into yet another soundtrack worthy clapper, full of austere synth work and clipping hi hats. All hail the Hemsworth. Stream below.

jason burns

As members of the ever-developing Pacific Northwest electronic music scene, Natasha Kmeto and Jason Burns have operated in the same general circles for the better part of a year now, but have never appeared on the same track before. That ended today when XLR8R premiered Burns’ remix of Dirty Mind Melt cut “Pleasure Delay”, a swinging cut that splits the difference between low end focused house (a la Dirtybird) and the pop-oriented garage of Disclosure. It’s a treat to have Kmeto’s pristine vocals and Burns’ swinging riddims on the same track. Stream below and download here.

andrea

Along with AlunaGeorge’s latest single, “Attracting Flies”, came news that Baauer and S-Type would be featured on the remix. In the past, the British duo have been remixed by Astral Plane favorites Samo Sound Boy, Bondax and Lil Silva, so the announcement came as no surprise. Before the aforementioned acts get their hands on “Attracting Flies” though, Paris-based producer Andrea has laid down his take. With a sound similar to the R&B inflections of Kastle’s Symbols imprint, Andrea’s remix is hook-heavy and reflective, opting for a slow, half-step pace rather than the original’s glowing speed. The edit is only a bootleg, but is sure worth more than that. Stream and download below.
