If you’ve been following our Heterotopia and Heterotopia Remixes series, you’ll have known that we planned on releasing a third volume of remixes featuring a host of our favorite artists, both from the original release and from other spheres. For various reasons, that volume didn’t come together in a timely fashion, but several tracks were made and several others might appear in the future. Imaabs’ clubby take on Arkitect’s “Foucault’s Dream” was one of the tracks that did come into fruition and after a little mastering work, it’s more than ready for public consumption. On top of that, Imaabs just embarked on a huge world tour, hitting dates across South America, North America and Europe. As one of the original Heterotopia artists and a long time friend and ally of the site, it’s a real pleasure to see this tour come together and for his name to spread across the world. It’s only been a few days since we dropped Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 2, but it’s hard not to look on to the next and final volume in the series. That being said, it almost seems like we’re getting a rhythm down with these releases and it’s a pleasure to see a good deal of our readers coming back for each of our first three releases. Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 2 Out Tomorrow!

With less than 24 hours until release, we’ve got a roundup of a few more tracks from Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 2. The first is Air Max ’97’s bootleg version of Jacque Gaspard Biberkopf’s “Public Love”, premiered by the good folks at Liminal Sounds this morning. Because of a hard drive crash, the Melbourne-based producer was forced to go off of the MP3 version of Biberkopf’s original, but that just made his kinetic flip even more inventive. Second is Gobstopper signee Iglew’s take on Celestial Trax’s “Illuminate”, the most grime-leaning attempt from Vol. 2 and a peak time banger if I’ve ever heard one. Vol. 2 can be found here tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. One week from today, we’ve got Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 2 on the docket, our third official release and the second volume in our Heterotopia remix series.

The second volume of Heterotopia Remixes has finally arrived, featuring a global collection of artists remixing songs from our debut compilation. With Air Max ’97, Mike G, Riley Lake, Rushmore and Victoria Kim involved, Vol. 2 is a thrilling run through stripped down club forms, a percussive melange that looks to Baltimore as much as it does Bristol. Angular club music has found its way into unexpected places as of late and this collection of producers are leading the way in the admirable charge to discomfit the dance music realm. This volume also features incredible art work by prodigal East Coast artist Terrell Davis (featured in Dazed, New York Times etc.), continuing the trend of reinterpreting the original release’s cover in new and exciting ways.

Out next Tuesday (March 10) via our Bandcamp, Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 2 features a selection of artists from the original compilation, as well as recent Gobstopper signee Iglew, who turned in an engrossing Astral Plane mix a few weeks ago. Chants_300dpi_b_wOriginally slated as an addendum to the original release of Heterotopia, Chants‘ “U Had Rhythm” grew into one of our favorite tracks from the release, transcending its placement in the bonus tracks. The Wisconsin-based producer has largely garnered a following via his warm instrumental hip hop productions, but his forceful drum tracks are what originally piqued our interest and all signs point to the two distinct styles eventually joining in blissful confluence. And after our infatuation with “U Had Rhythm”, bringing on Chants for the Heterotopia Remixes was one of the easiest decisions during the planning stage. His rework of Mike G‘s “Limestone”, the rushing 140 heat rock from original compilation, is another brilliant step forward, reaffixing the original’s shuttering crashes and vaulted square waves onto a syncopated club kick pattern. It’s harmonically forward thinking and subtly transfixing, a workout subducted under a heap of beatific chords. Chants not have made a name for himself in the world of club trax quite yet, but every brilliant addition to his record takes him a step closer. Fraxinus’ remix of Kid Antoine’s Nightvsion was premiered on Mixmag last week and FACT Mag got the jump on Sharp Veins’ Iglooghost remix on Wednesday. Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 1 is out February 3.

 

FACT MAG Premieres Sharp Veins’ Remix Of Iglooghost “Wood Farm”

After some time spent in London towards the end of 2014, American producer Sharp Veins has quickly ingratiated himself into a thriving international community of experimental producers and is set to debut on Glacial Sound in the near future. With a strong base in noise, ambient and computerized sound, he has found himself compared with the likes of the Janus folks out of Berlin, Total Freedom and his compatriots in Los Angeles and Virignia’s E+E. It was an obvious decision for us to reach out to Sharp Veins for our second release, Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 1, and his remix of Iglooghost’s “Wood Farm” has had us jumping out of seats for weeks. Ratcheting down the tempo for the remix (as he’s wont to do), SV’s take on “Wood Farm” begins as a lo-fi techno stomper, enveloped in rings of feedback and ambient noise that would make William Basinski proud. Halfway through, the remix disintegrates into almost nothingness before emerging into a neck snapping half-step composition, the cacophonous noise falling away to reveal a Clams Casino-esque crescendo. At over seven minutes, the remix might come across as presumptuous at first, but it’s strength comes in its ability to confound, surprise and engage. Sharp Veins’ remix of “Wood Farm” will be out next Tuesday (February 3) on Heterotopia Remixes Vol. 1. Watch this space for more information on the release and be sure to grab Fraxinus’ remix of Kid Antoine’s “Nightvsion” over at Mixmag.

Since the release of Heterotopia in October of last year, we’ve been working on a fitting follow up and today, we’re proud to announce a three volume series of Heterotopia Remixes, featuring reworks of songs from the original compilation. Our friends at Mixmag were kind enough to host Fraxinus‘ tumbling remix of Kid Antoine‘s “Nightvision” this morning and we’re excited to release Vol. 1 in a little over two weeks. We’ve worked to bring the original contributors, as well as a number of artists we admire, into the fold and couldn’t be happier with the final result. 1.) Felicita, Frenemies EP

Felicita’s 19 minute EP was released on pretty yellow vinyl but I don’t care about that! I want the glow in the dark drawstring bag. There were only 25 copies made. That’s so rare. It’s the perfect place to store Lush™ Bath Bombs, Sour Skittles, and mystic aphrodisiacs. Plus it comes with a Frenemies digital download (duh). I don’t know if there are any left but if any loved ones of mine are reading this there are still two days of Hanukkah!

2.) Cakes Da Killa, Hunger Pangs

Cakes played a show at my college earlier this year and I drove to pick him up from the airport. We got Chipotle together while waiting for MikeQ’s greyhound to get in. He was very nice and I had a great time. Later that night he tore the place down with whiplash bars that were sharp enough to make anyone bleed between the legs. Cop the deluxe edition of Hunger Pangs on these 4GB sticks (1000 songs).  Keep it coochie.

3.) Slugabed, Coolest EP

Has anyone bought one of these? Does Slugabed own one? Coolest EP is free. £50 is a lot of money! Maybe one day we will be able to get high-quality beach towels with our EPs for the low. This item is for the true collector/beach bum.

4.) Deru, 1979

Every other item here is (arguably) supplementary to the listening experience, but Deru’s 1979 is made to be experienced in its Obverse Box form. Diverging from the enclosed space of the time capsule, the Obverse Box is a projector made with the intention of experimentation and transformation. Each song from the 1979 album has received a unique visual treatment that mimics memory and follows Jackson Sonnanfeld-Arden’s Nine Pure Tones.

Premiere: Chants – “U Had Rhythm”

Chants_300dpi_b_wOver the past few weeks, we’ve been lucky to proffer up our debut compilation, Heterotopia, and disseminate it to all of you. We’ve also been joined by Apothecary Compositions to release a cassette version of the compilation, a somewhat arcane pursuit in the modern day, but an endeavor that has added physical depth and a collectors item sheen to the whole process. When we made the decision to release Heterotopia on cassette, we reached out to two artists, Piri Piri and Chants, who were unable to contribute to the original tape for several reasons. Earlier this week, we brought you Piri Piri’s contriubtion, the Gqom-inspired “Low Earth Orbit”, and today we have Chants’ churning “U Had Rhythm”. While largely peddling in sumptuous, sample-heavy hip hop modifications, Chants takes a strong right turn turn towards industrial clubland on “U Had Rhythm”, drafting up an excuse to eschew melody and revel in the madness of frantic, yet spatially aware percussion. While the Wisconsite leaves little to no room to breath in between the crashing, reverb-heavy kicks and cyclical, generator-like sub frequencies, there isn’t a single moment where “U Had Rhythm” feels overbearing. Instead, the track takes on a protean quality, settling into an established snare pattern for several bars before tossing it to the wind and reestablishing a new groove. As physical a track as they come.

Astral Plane Recordings x Apothecary Compositions

It’s with great pleasure that we can now announce that Astral Plane Recordings and Druid Cloak‘s Apothecary Compositions label are entering into a partnership to give Heterotopia (out now in digital form!) a physical release. As both a label and distributor, the Apothecary team works tirelessly to release well-rounded, fully-conceived statements and recently, they’ve been working with a number of digital-only labels (like us) on physical releases. In mid to late November, we’ll be letting loose a limited run of Heterotopia cassettes through the Apothecary store, an exciting opportunity to give all of you a physical memento of the compilation and an experiment in bringing club tracks to magnetic tape. The cassette will also feature two never before heard bonus tracks from Piri Piri and Chants, which will be revealed in the lead up to the release, as well as some creatively re-conceived art work. This partnership was easily ordained and placing next to labels like Night Slugs and Warp in the Apothecary web store will hopefully bring about some new exposure for us and the artists we work with.
