Mixes

Jweezy has does it again. Everyone’s favorite SP-404 maestro and surprisingly adept MC just featured in XLR8R’s podcast series. The mix is hip hop heavy, but like his live sets, features a heavy does of abstracted funk and video game sounds. Company Flow, Dr. Octagon and Defari are are all featured, as well as an exclusive Wayne remix of Lord Quas’s “Broad Factor.” XLR8R’s been killing it recently with their podcasts and this is one of the best in recent memory. You really can’t go wrong with this combination. Stream and download below.

I always enjoy when two really fantastic but previously unrelated things get combined into an even-more-spectacular entity. This morning, we bring you James Murphy x Boiler Room. The former LCD Soundsystem frontman recently threw down a 50-minute set at the London club, where he proved that he is not only a brilliant musician but also a pretty superb DJ. This is particularly exciting news for those of us getting continually more amped for Sasquatch!, as Murphy will be performing a DJ set at the festival. Additionally, those of us who missed the showing of the LCD/Murphy documentaryShut Up And Play The Hits, at SXSW a few weeks ago will be glad to have something James-Murphy-related to tide us over until the film hits theaters this summer. Head to the Boiler Room website to stream audio and video of Murphy’s entire set.

As we mentioned last week, the Dirty Projectors have a new album, Swing Lo Magellan, coming out on July 10th. The Brooklyn band has now announced an extensive tour schedule in support of their new release. The tour will begin in Canada in the beginning of July, and will then span the US for the rest of the summer, ending in mid-August. The openers for the tour are Baltimore indie-folk duo Wye Oak, and our previous Sasquatch! artist of the week, Purity Ring. If you missed Dirty Projectors’ new single, “Gun Has No Trigger,” stream it here, and find the band’s summer tour dates after the jump.

Last night, a short, pale man wandered into a radio station in London and proceeded to lay down one of the best mixes of the year. His name happens to be Rustie and the radio station happens to be BBC Radio One. The radio show, Pete Tong’s Essential Mix, happens to be one of the most influential mix series’ in the world. The track selection? Nothing too special. A little unreleased Obey City. A little unreleased Jackson and his Computer Band. A little unreleased Hudson Mohawke. A lot of unreleased Rustie, including a VIP of “City Star” and the demo version of “All Nite.” Maybe that TNGHT joint that Rustie previewed at the Boiler Room a couple months back. Like I said, nothing too special. Download the mix here and keep holding your breath until that TNGHT shit drops. Full track list after the jump.

Daedelus has been on fire lately, reinterpreting Chicago juke on his last track and bringing back this little trip-hop ditty from 2005. Now he’s featured on this month’s Topman CTRL mix and Juke influence he showed on “Curtains Don’t Talk” are readily available. I’ll let the curators take it away:

This DJ mix sees him delve into that love of the rhythms of juke and footwork, while also throwing in drops of dub, smooth radio pop, old jungle classics, and some very familiar cuts. It’s fast, frenetic but also beautiful; a masterclass in the art of DJing and throwing up surprises with the next song.

The mix features Krampfhaft, Machinedrum, as well as a steady heap of contemporary R&B. Stream below.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Living in greater Los Angeles, I have seen Nosaj Thing quite a few times over the past several years. He  occasionally plays at Low End Theory, and routinely shows up at venues across the city. I most recently saw him play a superb set at a free festival on USC’s campus. Tomorrow night, he’ll be playing at Funktion Wednesdays at Dim Mak Studios. It is for this reason that it comes as such a surprise that Nosaj hasn’t actually released any new music recently. Drift came out in 2009 and Nosaj has been fairly absent from the studio since, focusing instead on his live gigs. There have been murmurings of a new album in the works, but no concrete details have emerged. That’s why it was such a treat to listen to the mix Nosaj did for Mary Anne Hobbs’ XFM show last night. Made up mostly of original tracks, Jacques Greene, Lunice, Jamie XX, Machinedrum and Jonwayne also make appearances. The gem of the mix is the last five minutes or so where Nosaj drops a brand new collaboration with Teebs, then leads into a rework of Kendrick Lamar’s “Cloud 10” (which Nosaj produced). It isn’t new Nosaj, but what can you do. Stream the mix below.

There aren’t many constants in life, but one thing we can consistently count on is a quality XLR8R podcast every month. Podcast #241 features Danish producer and recently inducted Angeleno Tomas Barfod. With the release of last month’s Broken Glass EP, Barfod joined the Friends of Friends roster, slotting him in between beat maestros Shlohmo, Salva and Groundislava. His XLR8R mix touches on several genres, but keeps the focus on the melody, resulting in an incredibly free flowing mixture of house, techno and even some R&B. I generally like to read a mix’s tracklist after I listen through so that it doesn’t inform my opinion. When Miguel’s standout track “Adorn” Art Dealer Chic Vol. 1 started seeping through my speakers, a wry little smile came across my face, transcending the entire experience of listening to the mix. Stream and download the mix here and look out for Barfod’s upcoming full length Salton Sea on May 21.

Last night, bass connoisseur Sinjin Hawke brought his blasted out brand of beats to London radio station Rinse FM. Rinse DJ Monki brought the airhorns and gunshots. Over the proceeding 42 minutes, Sinjin set up a club atmosphere like no one else can. DJ Spinn, DJ Rashad and Mike Q are all there. So are the standard SInjin remixes and originals. The mixing is excellent as always. Rinse and Sinjin are quite a formidable combination

We apologise in advance for mentioning James Blake in the first sentence of this introduction, but it’s by far the simplest means of framing the music of Rob McAndrews, AKA Airhead.

That’s the first sentence of Resident Advisor’s post accompanying this week’s Podcast series, featuring Airhead. Kind of a bailout, because I was probably going to write a similarly lame lead in. Anyways, let’s toss the comparison’s aside. They’re both from South London, have been friends from a young age and are inextricably connected. Ok, deep breath. Now that that’s been said, let’s move onto the mix. After several years of flying fairly under radar, McAndrews is making waves. He was featured on Shlohmo’s Vacation EP last month and signed to R&S Records, home of likeminded artists like Lone, Pariah and Space Dimension Controller. This RA mix is made up of Airhead’s favorite tracks, for the dancefloor and for those quieter moments. It features quite a few Airhead originals, as well as tracks from R&S artists. The Jamie XX/Fantastic Mr. Fox collaboration that’s been floating around for a few months shows up, as does an unreleased Airhead/James Blake joint called “Int. Pembroke Anthem.” The mixing isn’t anything incredible here, although it is adequate, but the song selection and flow is pretty great. McAndrews allows the musical tides to ebb and flow with ease here, and 53 minutes feel effortless. Download the mix below and catch the whole tracklist after the jump.
