Yesterday, I wrote that the new TNGHT/Four Tet mix is “the pitch perfect melding of promethazine and ecstasy culture”. If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m prone to making sweeping statements. As hard (in the paint) as HudMo and Lunice went on Radio One, Shlohmo might have just one upped them in the narcotic combination department. Coming in at just under an hour, Mr. Laufer’s contribution to Resident Advisor’s longstanding podcast series is an exhibition in convolution. In the vein of Boston Bun’s Leanhouse mixtapes, Laufer “takes his previously stated love for chopped n screwed music, tilts back the heads of hip-hop, house, juke and R&B, and throws gallons of purple drank down their collective throats.” Kind of like Brodinski before him, Shlohmo’s mix is a compilation of his own screwed edits of house, juke, R&B and hip hop cuts. The mix is at its most successful when it exists on both ends of the tempo spectrum, exhibiting both raucous juke and lethargic R&B edits simultaneously. Head over to RA to download the mix and check the tracklist after the jump.

Com Truise Makes a Space Age Epic
Princeton, New Jersey producer Com Truise first grabbed my attention about a year ago with a wonky, neuvo-eighties remix of a neon indian song. This was in the wake of that whole chillwave thing, so neo synth pop was everywhere, but that tune stood out. This more recent effort is in another league. Almost completely devoid of vocal samples, the tune still grabs your attention with meticulously designed and layered synths, which possess a fat, analog quality and an utterly space age vibe at once. The sounds develop and morph throughout the song, and the structure defies convention in a wonderful way. This song is miles away from trap music, a rare and fantastic quality these days. Stream it at the Ghostly soundcloud, and check out his forthcoming LP, In Decay, here.
Monday Morning Vibes From Redlight

MMM. I remember this vocal, or some iteration of it, from Jamie xx’s tour de force of an essential mix and I’m so glad to hear it pop up again. Redlight puts the vocal smack dab in the center of the mix and builds a wonderful, housey jam around it. The bass is deep, the synths have vibes for days and the drums shuffle and pop in an utterly danceable manner. And Annie Mac is down. She claims to be giving the song away for free, but the downloadlink is non-existent on the soudcloud page :(. Regardless, please give this song a rinse below, I doubt you will regret it.
C.Z. Gets Properly Ratchet

It’s hard for me not to press play on a song with a genre of “Ratchet”. This instinct paid off, as this jawn from Florida producer C.Z. is one of the most puzzling little slappers I’ve come across in a cool minute. It’s decidedly trappy, but in a surprisingly original way. Tuned percussion stutters about the midrange in a strange, completely unique manner, and C.Z. sets it up with a tasty little vocal sample. The decidedly left-field take on the Lex Luger paradigm works wonders, and Baauer is down, seeing as he featured this track in his Diplo & Friends release. No word on an official release, but as of now you can grab this one as a free download.

Lunice U Durty

One of these days I’m gonna post about something substantive, something beautiful. But 2 me, making a club banger is becoming more and more important these days and is an art form in itself. I’m a little late to the party, but this track has been making some serious waves on the cloud of sound, and for good reason. Lunice’s rework of Flosstradamus and Danny Brown has all that I need on the dancefloor: a deeeep 808, snares/claps/whoops that stutter along perfectly with a nasty hook of a vocal sample, and some dark, wavy vibes. This is the kind of track that a casual listener might write off as cheap and dirty, but I see it as careful and focused. It’s focused on a subject material and sound that would immediately scare off most listeners over 25, but as far as something that fits into the hip-hop/club tradition, I love this track. It’s out now as a remix track on Flosstradamus’ Jubilation 2.0 EP, released through Fools Gold Records.
Look Like Makes You 1-2 Step
Wow, this is the first I’ve heard of this Swiss house wizard, but the vibes got me from the start. A bouncy four on the floor riddim complements a tuned down Missy Elliot like peanut butter and jelly. Please give this tune a spin; its fun, smart, and portends more good things to come.

Sasquatch 2012 Roundup
It’s been almost two weeks since we first pulled up to the cow pastures of George, WA and well, our daily lives just don’t quite contain the same excitement we experienced during those four transcendent days at the Gorge Amphitheater. Nonetheless, we take great pleasure in rehashing our adventures via set recaps and photos. Sasquatch has come and gone, but memories of dusty walks to and from the campsite, an innumerable amount of mind-blowing sets and many, many pretty lights are oh so fresh in our minds. It’s a bittersweet moment as we conclude our coverage of the very best weekend of the year, but it also means that Sasquatch is only 350-something days away. Enjoy.

Branko behind Mad Decent’s latest Jeffree’s offering (w/ remix support from French Fries, Beataucue, and Astronomar)
What up readers, if you’ve made it this far it’s clear you already know what it is. Allow me to explain. My name’s Jeremy, I grew up in San Francisco and have long been an aficionado of thought-provoking electronic tunes. In recent years, my eyes/ears have been turned towards the burgeoning UK bass scene spearheaded by Jamie xx (among others) and by labels like Night Slugs and 50 Weapons. Artists like Nicolas Jaar, Cedaa, Claude Vonstroke and Diplo, however, leave me plenty of reason to be excited about of the current state American electronic music. But enough about me, on to the music.
JEFF019, the newest installment of Mad Decent’s free-to-download Jeffree’s imprint–which in the past has brought us releases from producers like Baauer, Bwana and Flosstradamus, as well as Diplo, himself–comes by way of Branko. Once called J-Wow, Branko apparently ceded his original moniker to “a certain Italian-American from Jersey with the same name.” Guido beef aside, a couple of these remixes BANG. French Fries lowers the intensity of the original without sacrificing anything in the way of quality. Wait for that first bass hit and you’ll be hooked. French electroheads Beataucue also go frikin IN on Branko’s “Going In Hard,” which features up and coming Tampa rapper Dominique Young Unique. You can download the whole EP here (though I’ll warn you Mediafire’s been sketching me out lately): http://www.mediafire.com/?ccwuxac3wqti5l3
The tracks are also available for individual download on the Mad Decent Soundcloud page.
Post-Sasquatch Catch Up

Hello loyal readers. We regret the lack of action over the past week, but two thirds of the team has been at George, WA at Sasquatch. We learned a few things over the weekend; slow and steady wins the race; Jack Black shouldn’t be allowed near children; and most importantly, you should all learn to do the Larry David. In all seriousness, Sasquatch is an incredible festival in one of the most breathtaking natural settings one could imagine. Before we get to our coverage of the festival though, we have to catch up. It was an incredible weekend for bass/beat music so I’ll just get right into it.
Everyone and I mean everyone has eagerly been anticipating the release of the TNGHT (Hudson Mohawke x Lunice) EP on July 23, but before we bestow the duo with the crown, another Lunice side project needs to be fairly recognized. Nouveau Palais, made up of three Montreal-born beatsmiths, Lunice, Ango and Prison Garde, entered our airspace yesterday with the Avant Gang EP. Despite being named after a Montreal comfort food eatery, the trio’s music is far from cozy as it coyly bounces from futuristic takes on garage to hip hop to house. As an added bonus the EP features remixes from Canblaster & Sinjin Hawke, Salva, Monolithium and more. Oh yeah, it’s free courtesy of Red Bull Music Academy. Don’t sleep, pick the EP up right here.
Jonwayne has made quite the name for himself as an outspoken internet critic, sparring with fans on his various social networking profiles. He has also made a name for himself by unexpectedly releasing quality material via those same social networking profiles. The verbal diarrhea can get tiring at times, but then he’ll release something like Jonwayne Fucks Disney. Crafting using only an “SP-404 SX, an iPad used to access Youtube videos, and a Zoom H2 to bounce sounds to”, the 8 track beat tape is a testament to the La Habra producer’s dexterity behind the boards. Straying from his usual palette of 8-bit samples, the tape gets weird with a number of Disney samples from Dumbo, Alice In Wonderland and more. This one is not for the faint of heart. Also, a free download. Get it here.
Everyone and their mommas (us included) have had their panties in a bunch over a new school of MC’s made up of the likes of Danny Brown, the Black Hippy crew and A$AP Rocky. Nacho Picasso is another member of what SPIN called the “New Underground”, but has inexplicably received less praise than his compatriots. Exalted is Nacho’s third album of this year in collaboration with Blue Sky Black Death and it might just be their best output yet. It’s blunt music for the party. A hip hop take on The Weeknd in some sense, investigating the emotional gaps between the party and the after party, the dose and the overdose. Nacho’s lyrical output has improved with every album and Exalted is no different. Production-wise, BSBD has never been better, outgrowing their roots in instrumental hip hop long ago and growing into one of the premier forces in hip hop. This one isn’t free, but I can’t imagine you’ll find a better way to spend five dollars. Cop it here.
Haleek Maul, learn the name Internalize it and wait for his rise. The 15 year old Barbados via Brooklyn MC has been making some waves on the internet recently and “88”, produced by Chicago duo The-Drum, further solidifies himself as one of the most exciting MC’s to come out of the woodwork in a long, long time. My words aren’t a proper testament to this track so just give it a spin.
Only because of lack of time, I’ll speed through these last few. New Daedelus Fact Mag mix. Dark Ages EP on Salva’s Frite Nite. Jacques Greene did a mix for oki-ni. Hopefully this makes up for our lack of activity. Check back in a few hours for the first few installments of our Sasquatch coverage.
