Today on Seattle’s KEXP 90.3, a new remix of SBTRKT‘s “Hold On” was premiered, supposedly created by someone named “Sisi BakBak.” However, after a little sleuthing, it appears that Sisi BakBak may in fact be Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, due to a comment made by KEXP DJ Cheryl Waters regarding the evasive remixer’s plans to play Seattle’s Key Arena in the near future. Mysterious pseudonyms, Thom Yorke, AND SBTRKT all wrapped into one? We’re all ears.

Here’s the remix, accompanied by a video directed by Sam Pilling:

Union, OJ and Gold, two parisian producers with a knack for analog space age beats, remix Robert Glasper’s song Move Love Ft. King. This is for a remix contest hosted by Glasper. Union  released one of my favorite hip hop albums of 2012 so far called Analogtronics which I will put a post on this weekend. The album has a wide array of classic talent including Talib Kweli, MF Doom, Big Pooh, Guilty Simpson, Mani Hoffman, and some others. To get you excited for that, heres a showcase of the duos talent remixing Move love (Which I posted on earlier last month but if you didnt catch it, heres the track again.

The Union remix can be streamed here along with a remix by Vlooper Remelange. http://www.moovmnt.com/2012/02/16/robert-glasper-experiment-move-love-remix-contest-pt-2/#.Tz6fbPGPW2U

For The Astal Plane’s second live review, we’re stepping our game up a little bit. Unlike our last review, we managed to bring a camera (fully charged!) and got some nice shots. Last time it was Tokimonsta’s b-day set at Low End Theory. This time, we caught Jonwayne and Main Attrakionz at Pomona College.    Like last time, we hit a few bumps in the road though. We planned on doing a video interview with Mondre and Squadda B of Main Attrakionz, and in fact, we did interview the Oakland “cloud rap” duo. We also forgot to turn on the mic. As a result, instead of a five minute interview with Mondre and Squadda, we have five silent minutes of me looking awkward and them looking inebriated. In fact, it was actually a pretty decent interview covering topics ranging from how they met Clams Casino (through Keyboard Kid), coining the term “cloud rap,” and wanting to create their own legacy among Bay Area legends. Mondre and Squadda were more than willing to do the interview and were amiable throughout it. Read the rest of the review after the jump and check out photos from the show here.

I’ve been avoiding Valentines Day themed music all day, but this is too good to pass up. Everyone’s favorite maximalist, Hudson Mohawke, tones it down for one day to bring you Slow Jams Chapter V. For five years now, The Glaswegian native has brought the masses the best in slow jams and general love-making music. I haven’t had the chance to give the mix a spin, so I’ll let LuckyMe take it away:

5 years deep, the kid Hudson Mohawke returns with the definitive soundtrack to Valentines. Look, cancel that reservation. Put the money into good pizza and champagne. You’re getting this shit for free so buy your spiritual counterpoint something: the Heathers DVD. A single rose. Some salted caramels. Whatever. You got all the other magic you need right here. And if you’re alone tonight that’s okay; being into shit like this you’re gonna be fine. Trust us. Buy yourself those caramels. Get naked enough. Let a lil Mo get inside you… Happy Valentines everybody.

It looks like Kendrick Lamar might have gotten some inspiration from the spaced-out production fellow Black Hippy Schoolboy Q’s Habits & Contradictions. Or maybe he just really enjoyed working with Nosaj Thing last year. Anyways, Kendrick’s newest track, “Cartoons and Cereal” features the Compton spitter changing up his cadence repeatedly over a futuristic beat alongside another MC and a female vocalist. The beat devolves into pure percussion at times, before ramping up again as Kendrick chants over the top. If this track is any indication of how Kendrick’s first official release, Good Kid in a Mad City, will turn out, we are in for a treat. It will be tough to top Section.80, but so far Kendrick has avoided all of the major label trappings and stayed true to himself and his true. Stream/download “Cartoons and Cereal” below and be on the lookout for album news.

Update: The non-Kendrick MC on the track is Gunplay and frequent collaborator THC is on the beat.

We have been on a Bonobo kick lately here at the Astral Plane with the new Remix album set to come out on the 13th. I thought it would be good to show off the bands pure musical talent in this live video. If you haven’t noticed I am a big fan of bands that can perform equally as well or better out of the studio. IE BadBadNotGood, Robert Glasper, Bonobo, and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are all bands I have posted on who, I believe, can perform even better in a live setting. With the help of a live band, Bonobo (Simon Green) plays live versions of his studio tracks with the help of a keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist, a singer, and a drummer. To start us off, I thought it would be cool to show you guys the live version of the remix that we posted on yesterday. Here is a live version of their song Eyesdown Feat. Andreya Triana in Bracknell 2010.

Next up is one of my favorites, this is their song called Nothing Owed off of their Dial M for Monkey album released in 2003. The live version is on their Live Sessions EP released in 2005. I highly recommend getting this album as it showcases the talent of Simon Green and the band that plays with him.

If you haven’t noticed yet, Machinedrum is a favorite over here at The Astral Plane. When I heard that he was remixing Bonobo’s “Eyesdown”, another Astral Plane favorite, I could barely contain my excitement. The final product though left something to be desired. Something about the breakbeat drums and scattered vocals just didn’t match up. Until the video dropped. I have a thing for animated music videos. Something about music put to well done animation just gets to me. The “Eysdown” video, animated by Anthony Schepperd (who also did Blockhead’s “The Music Scene) truly breathes air into an otherwise empty feeling song. Most videos serve as a compliment, or in some cases a detriment, to a song, but Schepperd manages to take Machinedrum’s mediocre original to another level.

Knxwledge made another tribute to the great J Dilla yesterday. Using Dilla’s classic track, Let’s Take It Back, Knxwledge flips the track perfectly in this little remix to pay tribute to one of the best that ever did it. Check out the original if you haven’t heard it yet and Knxwledge’s after that.

Lytesho! aka Charles Amara is back with another tape. The Wilkes-Barre, PA native caught our attention last month with his promising Concept of Space EP. Over the weekend, Amara released his third tape, Two/Six, a collection of beats and instrumentals. Two/Six shows a marked improvement over his past two efforts and is the young artists most cohesive work to date. The tape starts off with haunting vocals and a sample of what sounds like talk radio. Maybe Amara drew inspiration from Exile’s Radio project, or gasp, maybe even LL Cool J’s classic album. “Metal Ox” and “Neon Smoke” are the highlights, but the tape is at its best when listened to from start to finish.

Ladies and gentlemen, it seems long-absent OFWGKTA member Earl Sweatshirt has returned. The youngest (but possibly the most promising) member of Odd Future, who has been away from the music scene for quite some time, is reportedly free from his stint at reform school/rehab at Coral Reef Academy in Samoa.

Yesterday afternoon, new Twitter and Tumblr pages surfaced, seemingly linked to Earl. His first tweet upon return? “Home.” Then, a YouTube video popped up, featuring Earl’s face backed by a snippet of a new song. “You want the whole shit, give me 50,000 twitter followers,” the description demanded.

Just a few hours later, his Twitter account had reached 50k followers, and he Tweeted the link to a new website, which was barren except for a music player containing a new song, “Home.” The track, which does indeed seem to be new material from Earl, is backed by a noisy, cymbal-heavy beat and contains the dark, nonchalant flow we’ve been missing from the young rapper. The last line states, “and I’m…..back. Bye.Download the full song here.

However, before you throw out your Free Earl hoodie, it’s only fair to let you know that Tyler, The Creator‘s tweets from yesterday expressed far more frustration and anger than the celebration we might have expected from him. One tweet, which has since been deleted, read, “Ive Never Been Excited And Angry At The Same Time Until Today. Thats A Fucked Feeling.” So for now, only time will tell whether Earl is back in LA for good. We’ll keep you posted.
