Every so often, the bubbly come ons of SPF666’s “Here Little Kitty” remix or his own “Tsundere ツンデレ” will rise through the mix at the club, an always-welcome interjection and a reminder that the Portland-based artist has turned in some of the most indelible entries to the less conventional end of the club music spectrum. It’s been a few years since the release of his Scorpion Cache EP and while original music has been few and far between, the Club Chemtrail representative has stayed busy, contributing excellent writing and mix work to FACT’s Originators series and showing up with the occasional cheeky remix.

Last Thursday, we received the largest transmission from the SPF666 universe in quite some time, a Halloween Horror-themed mixfile for Martha’s Radar Radio show. Comprised of edits and blends of music from Friday The 13thLost BoysThe Hills Have EyesTetsuo The Ironman and more, SPF666’s takes range from dembow to hardstyle and are as rooted in legitimate study and affection for those genres as they are campy experimentation. We’ve got both the vocal and riddim versions of the “Childs Play Riddim” and “Glass Box Riddim” on premiere today, the former featuring Popcaan’s “Way Up” and the latter resuscitating Cassie’s classic “Me & U”. The perfectly swung lurch of the dembow beat form the backbone of both and choral pads (on the former) and haunting charms (on the latter add more than enough of a creep element. The riddims would be silly if it they weren’t so well produced and the vocals didn’t fit so seamlessly over the top, a welcome reminder that self-serious music doesn’t have to be stodgy. On Monday night, we took to the airwaves for our monthly slot on Radar Radio (fourth Monday of every month) and brought along a guest mix from Resla, one of our favorite new producers who has gotten a lot of play in previous Radar sessions and featured in our monthly column for FACT Magazine. The Chilean producer’s guest session plays out in the second hour and features almost 50 songs including new material from Astral Plane faves mobilegirl, Soda Plains, Spaceseeds, Santa Muerte and Dinamarca. It’s sent us scrambling since he first sent it over and if you can follow the rapid switch ups you might just get an early taste of a heap of forthcoming material. The Astral Plane DJ Team handles the first hour, which features some unreleased label material, forthcoming tracks from Imaabs, Kid Antoine & CYPHR and Letta, plus a quick run through of our favorite non-dance tracks of late. Hit the jump for a track list and enjoy. We’ll be back on September 26.

With an in-house/DIY focused model, Milwaukee’s Close Up of the Serene outfit have jetted out of the gates in 2016 with key releases from Athletic Supply, Liquid City Motors, Pharo and Mercury Drums. Unlike more traditional electronic labels with clear divisions of labor, Close Up is more of a collaborative effort and virtually every release has featured work from each member of the crew, whether it comes in the form of mixing and mastering work, cover photography or, in the case of Athletic Supply, full on instrumentation and live assistance. Considering our past adoration for Liquid City Motors’ output and assistance with our own label operations (he has mastered each of our releases to date) and the quality found in each Close Up release so far, it was an easy choice to bring them on for this month’s Radar Radio show, which aired last night. The first hour of the show, helmed by the Astarl Plane DJ Team, segues from dancehall, reggaeton and rap into noisy manipulations from Rabit, Ceramic TL, M.E.S.H. LXV and more before heading into the Close Up guest mix, recorded by label head Max Holiday, which effortlessly weaves techno, acid and post punk, largely from the label itself, into a doggedly gorgeous hour of direct rhythms, anguished choruses and squelching basslines. All three tracks from Liquid City Motors’ excellent Untitled 2 EP, out now on Close Up, appear in the mix as well, sounding impressively in line with the rest of the label’s output and productions from legends like Joey Beltram, Robert Hood and Plastikman. Hit the jump for a track list for the full show, download the show here and look out for our next Radar show on August 22.

With our long running mix series functioning as a platform for relatively established artists and various one-off mixes often featuring a glut of forthcoming Astral Plane Recordings material, we’ve attempted to use our monthly show on Radar Radio to highlight exciting new talent, both in the part of the mix that the Astral Plane DJ Team handles and in the guest mix slots. This month’s show features two guest slots from two of our favorite East Coast up-and-comers, Washington DC’s Swan Meat and New York’s Kala, each simultaneously building up and tearing down a huge assortment influences. Somehow, two Evanescence blends were rinsed, which is probably a first, and the overall vibe of the show is fairly intense so prepare yourselves. In the first hour, we teased out some forthcoming label material from Exit Sense and LOFT, as well as a track from Nunu’s Mind Body Dialogue, which is out this Friday! Anyways, hit the jump for track lists from each portion of the show and look out for our next show on July 25.

For our latest session on Radar Radio, we grabbed Kai Whiston and Hunni’d JAWS for the guest mix slots, the former a prodigious artist with a mystifying forthcoming release on TAR and the latter one half of Berlin Community Radio’s indomitable Call Dibs show. Despite coming from very different places, both mixes fit together really nicely, drawing from a range of industrial-tinged club music and drawing lines between everything from MC Bin Laden and M.E.S.H. to FIS and GAIKA. In the first hour, the Astral Plane DJ Team laid out some of our favorite recent and forthcoming tracks from the likes of Terribilis, x/o, Air Max ’97 and DJ Tiga, as well as some tracks from Nunu’s forthcoming Astral Plane release. Look out for news on that very soon. If you’re in Los Angeles, you can catch the Astral Plane DJ Team at CyberSonicLA this Saturday (5/28) alongside Kush Jones, Jeremiah Meece b2b Schwarz, Swisha and residents Sha Sha Kimbo and Swelta. Not one to miss. We’ll back on Radar on June 27. Thanks for listening.

yoshitaka-hikawa

We only came across Yoshitaka Hikawa‘s music this year, but in the matter of a few months he has become an Astral Plane favorite, showing off his clattering aesthetic across a series of edits, collaborations and mixes and establishing himself as one of the foremost voices in the edit/collage sector. Noisy, manic and often full of odd vocal bits, tranquil piano and enough paranoiac ambience to unsettle just about anyone, the Japanese artist’s work is truly special and it was a pleasure to have him come on our Radar Radio show earlier this week. Hikawa came through a special of only music from London’s Beatgatherers outfit, which makes sense because he’s released some of his best work on the label. Tracks from Hikawa himself, Pope, Graves and Barla highlight the mix which starts at about an hour and thirty three minutes in. The Astral Plane DJ Team starts of the first two thirds of the mix with a heap of Astral Plane Recordings material and new dubs and releases from Sully, Bruce, Leonce, Liquid City Motors, Mr. Mitch, Mechatok, B. YHZZ, Silk Road Assassins, x/o, Celestial Trax, Dis Fig, GAIKA, Famous Eno, Tsvi & Lorenzo_BITW, DJ Tray and DJ Haram. It’s all over the place as we like it so trap in and enjoy. Track list after the jump.

radar radio abyss x nunu horizontal

For the March edition of our Radar Radio show, we tapped two very special artists for guest mixes. Starting with this show, we’ll be putting more of an emphasis on guests and pushing new talent, hoping to offer up a less rigid platform for bringing on artists than our mix series. The first guest session comes from Abyss X, one of our favorite Los Angeles-based artists who officially debuted on Lao’s Extasis label last year. The Greek-born artist’s mix runs along at a torrid pace, hitting on gqom, southern rap, mahraganat and seemingly everything in between. Check out her Echoes EP here and look out for more heat from Abyss X moving forward. French artist Nunu came through with the second session for the show and this Summer he’ll be joining the Astral Plane Recordings family with his label debut. More news on that to come, but for now you can imbibe in his mix which balances noisy pop tropes and contemporary club jams with aplomb. Our own Astral Plane DJ Team starts off the first hour with new tracks from Ziúr, Chino Amobi, Brood Ma, Waterhouse, Mina & Lorenzo_BITW, Gage, v1984, Amnesia Scanner, Celestial Trax & Roosevelt, Mercury Drums and more. Stream the show below, download here and check out the (partial) track list after the jump.

Our monthly show on Radar Radio aired last night and in the first time since November, we didn’t bring out any guests and just ran out a whole show of tracks Astral Plane Recordings, friends and artists/labels that we admire. If you’re curious about what kind of vibe we’re going for with the label you’re not going to find a more coherent sense of that vision (for now). Besides new label material, new tracks from Hex, Lamont, Sami Baha, Celestial Trax, Eaves and JT The Goon wowed us this past month and really made for a fun two hour session from our home base here in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. In the next few weeks, we’ll be back on FACT with a February edition of For Club Use Only and will be announcing a very special 100th Astral Plane mix, featuring our very favorite DJ duo and a crew that has been on it since day one. Also look out for news on APR102 which was mastered in a secret studio in Milwaukee over the weekend. All going to be very special. Thanks for listening. Hit the jump for a full track list.

Having a regular outlet for our mix work has been a real pleasure this year and we have to give a big shout to great team at Radar Radio for hosting our monthly show. Radar has managed to curate a thoroughly diverse schedule of shows featuring names big and small in a remarkably short period and we couldn’t be happier to be part of the team. Our last show of 2015, from December 28, featured Seattle hardcore techno purveyor HHOPE on the guest mix and a selection of some of our favorite ambient/drone/other non-club oriented musics. You can hear a few tracks from SHALT’s upcoming Acheron EP, out January 29 on Astral Plane Recordings, and some special bootlegs of tracks from October’s Psychotropia compilation. Hit the jump for the full track list, featuring tracks from Sim Hutchins, Exit Sense, Pan Daijing, Chino Amobi and more, stream below and download here.

After hosting them at our monthly Clubfriends night at The LASH a few weeks back, we had two of Los Angeles’ finest, Letta and Patrick Brian, representatives of the vaunted Coyote and Terrorhythm clans respectively, suit up for a b2b session on our Radar Radio show. The results are blinding and full of the sort of dubs, edits and madness we’ve come to expect from these two on their own. There aren’t a ton of people anywhere doing it like Letta and PB, especially in the City of Angels, so stay locked and join us on December 28 for our next Radar session. No track list for the second hour, but you can peep what the Astral Plane DJ Team played throughout the first. Stream below and download here.
