jaw jam

And once again, Will DiMaggio aka Jaw Jam flips a sexy, late night anthem into something even more fitting for 4 AM club play. From the producer’s mouth:

This remix came together rather differently, as I initially set out to remix an entirely different song. While in search for the acappella for Dexplicit’s “Wifey4Lifey”, I came across a vinyl rip of “Wifey” by Next. The acapella is one of my favorites lyrically (your are so crucial girl / so critical girl), and I rarely work with male R&B vocals so I thought I’d give it a shot. Plus I never really understood why people don’t say “wifey” anymore.

“Wifey (U Are So Beautiful)” was originally intended for a Symbols release, but was (questionably) rejected and is now available for all of you beautiful people. I trust that you’ll know the time to throw this one and utilize to its full potential.

victoria kim

We usually don’t post radio rips around these parts (especially ones that are over a month old), but sometimes a track is just so prescient and on-point that it deserves belated attention. Victoria Kim is an Australian duo with a predilection towards sampling American pop in their four-on-the-floor techno endeavors. Mixing the hard-edge bend of a Blawan or Kowton with the familiarity of the most banal strains of top 40, Victoria Kim have managed to meld two seemingly oppositional worlds into one immutable blend. Take “Talk Talk” for example, a Justin Bieber-sampling tune that was debuted on Breach and Citizen’s Rinse.FM show last month. Splitting the difference between Jacques Greene-esque bedroom house and the aforementioned Brits, “Talk Talk” sits comfortably between familiarity and dissonance, drawing the listener in with its all too familiar vocal sample, before delving into druggy, late night club debauchery. Expect a lot more from this prodigious duo in the next few weeks and stream “Talk Talk” below.

casino - ex drug dealer

After featuring heavily on January’s Freebandz tape, Casino, who is Future’s real life brother, is back with Ex Drug Dealer. While Casino hasn’t found his Mike Will yet, he’s stil an exciting newcomer. Whether he’s crooning in alien cadences like his brother or waxing poetic about crack deals over Zaytoven and 808 Mafia production, he shows an impressive flow and command over his subject matter. The skits at the beginning of each Ex Drug Dealer track could probably be removed, but what can you do, it’s a powder-inspired tape. Download Ex Drug Dealer below.

grown folk

On April 23, Friends of Friends sister label Young Adults will release a compilation called House Slippers. The compilation will feature label stalwarts Suzanne Kraft and Permanent Vacation, as well as brand new tracks from relative newcomers NYCPARTYINFO and Chamboche. Today, we receive a treat from the comp in the form of brand new Grown Folk. Whether they’re producing for Main Attrakionz or riling up dancefloors across the U.S. and beyond, the duo of Drew Kim and Brendan Neal have been absolutely tearing it up. “Just Wear It” sees the duo combine a number of their influences including trance and old school Chicago house into one sexy-as-hell groover that should probably soundtrack your next nocturnal adventure. For now, we only have a four minute clip available, but that just means you’ll have to snag the entire compilation come the 23rd. Stream a new Mark E joint that will also appear on House Slippers after the jump.

flying lotus

Last night’s animated television enigma Adventure Time episode featured a never before heard Flying Lotus choon in the closing credits that has since gone relatively viral. FlyLo has released music through Adult Swim in the past so this foray into cartoon territory isn’t exactly uncharted, but it’s exciting nonetheless. “About that time//A glitch is a glitch” sees FlyLo return to the blunted 1983/Los Angeles sound that first endeared him to fans and pushed him into his current position as international beat scene ambassador. It’s fast, off-kilter and heavily based in 8 bit sounds and video game samples. It’s tenuously based in hip hop, but its rich synth arrangements and thumping kick drum are beyond anything the genre has produced to date. It’s vintage FlyLo with a more modern, filled out take. I don’t think anyone would be mad if he released an EP of similarly sounding songs. No word on a download and/or release date, but I think it’s fair to say that we all have our fingers crossed.

dj sliink

Sometimes you just need to throw caution to the wind, abandon all pretensions and just enjoy some ignorant dance music. We here at The Astral Plane hold by the belief that dancing is a universal activity    regardless of age, nationality or musical preference. And that’s why we’re bumping DJ Sliink’s remix of Bert On Beats’ “Dab” in our “office” this morning. It’s not Sliink’s most convincing effort to date, but fuck is it fun to have a little release after listening to highly conceptual music from the likes of James Blake and Nico Jaar all morning. It’s free and available so we expect you to join in wherever you are.

xxxyIt’s becoming clearer and clearer every day that xxxy is gunning for the crown. The London by-way-of Manchester producer has already released an EP through Rinse.FM’s label arm this year and is prepping a second extended player for Welsh label Ten Thousand Yen, out on April 15. From the man’s mouth himself:  “I made another record for the lovely Welshmen at Ten Thousand Yen. The A side is an arpy thing with bass the flip is a vocally thing with bass. They both contain breakdowns – please don’t hold this against me xoxo.” So there you have it, arpy and vocally, but the key is the focus on the deepest, darkest recesses of the low end. Unremitting, yet soothingly rhythmic, the bass weight on “Progression” is an audial sight to behold and should only be witnessed on a fitting worthy of the task. xxxy also recently took on a remix of Clean Bandit’s “Mozart’s House”, which you can stream after the jump.

karenn

The industrial techno that Blawan and Pariah pump out as Karenn has an intrinsically physical nature to it. That’s a result of both the analogue equipment the duo use to make music and of the setting in which it seems destined to be played at. Whether gully warehouse raves really still exist on a widespread level is rather inconsequential, but it’s impossible to avoid that venue as the ideal place to hear Karenn play music. There are no bathrooms, security or ventilation in Karenn’s world and we’re all the better for it. The drugs your taking are probably bunk, but that’s all for the better in this hardline, rough-edged techno dystopia. It’s all about submerging oneself in the pure physicality. Karenn’s remix  of Delta Funktionen’s “Onkalo” is the second track in the below file. The remix will be released via Delsin on May 6.

jamie grind

Over the past few months, Leeds-based producer/DJ Jamie Grind has entered our consciousness and captivated it with his brilliant take on traditional garage. Of course, Grind has been around for longer than that and has been rotating between Leeds, Manchester and London, leading club nights and remixing the likes of Hackman and Rude Kid. Back in February, we caught up with Jamie via Skype and spoke on his past life as an MC, grindcore and how he defines his music. Expect to hear a lot more from this guy in the future.

What’s up Jamie, how’s life in London treating you?

I’m actually living back in Leeds now. I was living in London for a while, then Manchester, and now I’m back in Leeds. I move around a lot!

Are you still working with Modulate?

Nope. We only did Modulate for a few months – I had too many other commitments to be running a monthly club night to be honest.

Can you give a brief background to who you are, where you’re from and where the “Grind” part of your name comes from?

Grew up in a small council house in Leeds. Wanted to be an actor – then realised at 16 that I didn’t. Formed some trashy ‘grindcore’ bands and got the nickname Jamie Grind – which just kind of stuck. Dropped out of college, worked some shitty jobs. Tried a few other musical projects to limited success. Started freaking out a bit. Discovered the DMZ raves at the West Indian Centre in Leeds and started making tunes. Got a couple of decent jobs in the digital industry. Started playing gigs as Jamie Grind. Moved to London. Moved around a bit more, and somehow found my way back to Leeds. And that’s pretty much my life up to now.

figgy

We were introduced to Figgy back in January when he expertly remxied Drake’s “Doing It Wrong”, melting Aubrey’s vocals into checkmunk territory over a seductive slow house jam. Yesterday, we received another remix in the same mold, this time a timely refix of The-Dream’s “Ghetto”. The-Dream’s falsetto slides right into the grooves of Figgy’s aloof production, which leans towards the pseudo-trance that’s becoming increasingly popular. Stream below and grab the remix here.
